Item Strengthening Unity: allusion as a discursive practice in President Zelenskyy’s war rhetoric(2025) Nedainova, IrynaAbstract. This research examines the use of allusion as a powerful linguistic tool employed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his international war discourse. Faced with the urgent need to secure assistance and support from the world community throughout the first year of Russia’s large-scale invasion, Zelenskyy strategically references well-known cultural facts to create a specific mental image of Ukrainians as a nation that upholds humanistic values such as tolerance, equality, and justice. The study analyzes five types of audiences targeted by the Ukrainian President in his appeals: national parliaments, collective political bodies, business forums, educational institutions, and cultural assemblies. The findings demonstrate that allusion in his discourse is a key discursive practice tailored to each audience’s specificity. In every instance, the identified allusions reveal their emotional, evaluative, and associative connotations. In President Zelenskyy’s speeches, allusions also function as tactical instruments that yield effective results in his communication with international audiences. The paper concludes that the use of allusion makes the President’s speeches emphatic and his audiences more receptive, showcasing a high pragmatic capacity to craft desired images within foreign linguistic and cultural contexts.
Item Milan Kundera a některé tradice německy psaného středoevropského románu(2025) Kučera, PetrČlánek se zaměřuje na vztah mezi románovou a esejistickou tvorbou Milana Kundery a literárním dědictvím středoevropských „antimodernistických“ modernistů – Franze Kafky, Roberta Musila, Hermanna Brocha a Rainera Marii Rilkeho, kteří ztělesňují smysl pro světskost, o který Kundera vědomě usiloval. Kromě zkoumání konceptů detailu, literárního typu a zejména metafory jako specifického způsobu vnímání a chápání reality se článek zabývá problémem nové formy tzv. filozofického románu. Kontemplativní povaha této románové formy, která se polemicky zabývá určitými radikálními rysy modernismu, představuje ve světové literatuře alternativu, jejíž přitažlivost nabývá na relevantnosti v 21. století. Jako emigrant z „unesené“ střední Evropy rozvíjí Kundera v západní Evropě formy umění a myšlení, které mají potenciál vést podstatný dialog s příliš „expanzivními“ formami modernismu 20. století.Item Komplexní subordonant napříč tomu, že v dnešní češtině(2024) Drobník, Ondřejpopis problematiky pomocí korpusových metod – gramatografická desckiripce, cílem bylo zaplnit lakuny v popisu současné čeětinyItem Pocity a potřeby žáků středních škol(2025) Krucká, JanaPocity jsou klíčovým faktorem ovlivňujícím vzdělávací proces, s potenciálně pozitivním i negativním dopadem. Navzdory existujícím výzkumům a rostoucímu důrazu na well-being ve školním prostředí není oblasti prožívání žáků a jejich subjektivním potřebám v českém kontextu věnován dostatek pozornosti. Tento příspěvek přináší bližší vhled do problematiky pocitů a potřeb žáků a předkládá analýzu dotazníkového šetření realizovaného na středních školách různých typů v Plzeňském kraji, jehož se zúčastnilo 350 žáků. Výzkum odhaluje komplexní obraz prožívání žáků, včetně významných rozdílů mezi dívkami a chlapci. Prezentovaná zjištění rovněž mapují nejčastější potřeby a přání žáků.
Item Czech-ing Shakespeare: Tracing Shakespeare’s Influence (not only) in Czech Advertisements(2024) Mišterová, IvonaShakespeare’s plays are indisputably among the most translated, staged, and adapted works for both theatre and screen. The texts undergo updating, recontextualization, and transcultural adaptation to engage audiences across different age groups, thereby facilitating their reception. This article explores Shakespeare’s position in modern popular culture. Initially, Shakespeare’s status in popular culture is discussed, drawing on the concepts of Graham Holderness (1988), Douglas Lanier (2002, 2006), and Marjorie Garber (2008). The article then examines selected popular Shakespearean representations, such as Richard Burt’s concept of “Schlockspeare” (2002), which focuses on the use of catchphrases, references, along with both textual and visual allusions to Shakespeare in advertising (e.g. mortgage loans from Commercial Bank, a Shakespeare-inspired yogurt, etc.). The objective is to demonstrate that popular culture serves to disseminate Shakespeare’s work without diminishing its inherent value, echoing Graham Holderness’s assertion that Shakespeare is, here, now, always, what is currently being made of him.Item Things Can Only Get Dickensian: An Analysis of Media Coverage of Britain’s Cost of Living Crisis(2024) Tihelková, AliceThe period following the 2008 financial crisis saw the UK enter a period of austerity, exacerbated by the wideranging welfare spending cuts of consecutive Conservative governments. Nevertheless, when it appeared thatthe situation could not become more dire for struggling Britons, the country found itself in the grips of a cost ofliving crisis precipitated by several concurrent developments such as inflation, an energy crisis, and the falloutfrom Brexit. Using qualitative thematic analysis, this article examines coverage of the crisis by the British press byexploring how individual newspapers on both the political right and left have chosen to report on the indicators,causes, and victims. The aim is to establish whether the standard political leanings of the papers apply here, orwhether the situation is so exceptional in its urgency that the usual stereotypes (strivers/scroungers, deserving/ undeserving poor) have been abandoned for a more unified discourse.Item De djos à hoes en passant par morrays et igos: comment le rap influence la circulation des lexèmes identitaires pour les jeunes(2023) Fiévet, Anne-Caroline; Mudrochová, Radka; Podhorná-Polická, AlenaLes chansons de rap jouent un rôle important en tant que vecteur de diffusion de lexèmes d'argot, qui deviennent partie intégrante de l'identité des jeunes. En croisant les résultats de plusieurs méthodologies (recherches dans 10 dictionnaires en ligne et questionnaires remplis par 14 adolescents), nous observons la circulation de 6 lexèmes présentant différents modèles de diffusion. Tandis que boloss et kho sont des éléments lexicaux largement connus et ce depuis longtemps, igo et djo sont considérablement moins connus, et morray semble être en déclin d'utilisation. Quant à l'anglicisme hoe, sa diffusion en français est bien attestée dans les paroles de rap mais pas dans les dictionnaires ni dans les réponses aux questionnaires, donc sa circulation nécessite une surveillance. Ces exemples sont représentatifs des manières dont les nouveaux mots s'insèrent de manière ascendante en français et soulignent la variabilité de leur dissémination et de leur description dans les dictionnaires.Item Introduction: East-Central and Central-East Europe as an Imagined Space for Shakespeare(2023) Mišterová, Ivona; Havlíčková Kysová, ŠárkaThe special issue of Multicultural Shakespeare grew out of several years of cooperation among Shakespearean, theatre, and film studies scholars based in or attracted to the Visegrad countries. Their activities were supported not only by the universities with which they are affiliated but also, in recent years, by two Visegrad Fund projects. The first of the projects, titled Shakespeare in Central Europe after 1989: Common Heritage and Regional Identity , examined the canonised oeuvre of William Shakespeare and its reception in the post -Communist countries after 1989. The group of researchers, which became known as CEESRA (Central European Shakespeare Research Association), led enthusiastic discussions about Shakespeare ' s plays used as a touchstone for social attitudes, historical awareness, and cultural memory in the region. The project aimed to uncover the uniqueness of cultural heritage and historical experiences shared in the region. The results of the project were published in the special issue of the peer -reviewed journal Theatralia (2021), titled Shakespeare in Central Europe after 1989: Common Heritage and Regional Identity (Vol. 24, Special Issue 2021) Theatralia.Item The “Final Rays” of a Setting Sun: Lenka Reinerová and the Legacy of “Prague German Literature”(2024) Balcarová, MarkétaLenka Reinerová is considered a contemporary witness of both the 20th and 21st centuries and the last German writer in Prague. Indeed, she is the last known prose writer from Prague who wrote in German and boasts a long list of famous predecessors, such as Franz Kafka, Max Brod, E. E. Kisch and others. Interestingly, Reinerová did not only earn a place among the Prague German literature writers because of her mother tongue. In her memoirs, she also engages with literary and academic discourse on the German-language literature coming from Prague. The following article aims to describe this continuity in more detail.Item Literaturjiddisch für „westjüdische“ Leser. Jüdische Witz-Anthologien aus Pressburg/Poszony und ihre soziolinguistischen Facetten(2024) Blahak, BorisDer Aufsatz betrachtet die Verwendung des Jiddischen in einer um 1900 in jüdisch-deutschen Kreisen österreichisch-ungarischer Stadtzentren (Wien, Pressburg, Budapest) beliebten literarischen Textsorte: dem jüdischen Witz, der von jüdischen Herausgebern in Anthologien explizit für ein als „ünsere Leut“ angesprochenes Publikum veröffentlicht wurde. In diesen literarischen Miniaturen-Sammlungen kommt der regional bereits nahezu ausgestorbenen Sprache die soziologische Funktion eines ,lieu de mémoire‘ (Pierre Nora) für die Gruppe ihrer (ehemaligen) Sprecher zu. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht zum einen die linguistische Gestalt konzeptioneller Jiddisch-Varietäten, zum anderen deren literarische Funktionalisierung im Wechselspiel mit dem Schriftdeutschen und anderen in den k. u. k. Stadtzentren präsenten Substandard-Varietäten.Item Luring Back the Red Wall: Examining Keir Starmer’s Discourse Strategies to Regain Labour’s Heartlands after 2019(2023) Tihelková, AliceIn 2019, the Labour Party suffered the worst election defeat since 1935, with the “Red Wall”constituencies in the Midlands and the North taken over by Boris Johnson’s Tories. Among other things,the loss was blamed on Labour’s excessive focus on issues popular with the progressive metropolitanelectorate rather than the traditional working-class communities from left-behind regions. In order tore-engage the disaffected voters, the new Labour leader Keir Starmer faced the necessity of emphasizingpolicies and issues favoured by an essentially socially conservative electorate. Using the method ofCritical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and drawing on a variety of political speeches and news broadcasts,the paper examines Keir Starmer’s rhetoric aimed at reclaiming the lost Labour voters.Item Anton Schott – ein vergessener Heimatdichter aus dem Böhmerwald. Zu seiner Prosa mit Fokus auf die Darstellung nationaler Konstellationen(2023) Balcarová, MarkétaAnton Schott (1866-1945) ist ein vergessener deutscher Autor des Böhmerwaldes. Er war zu seiner Zeit sehr beliebt - er schrieb lesenswerte ländliche Romane und Erzählungen aus dem Böhmerwald. Im Stil der Heimatliteratur zeigt er dem Leser das harte Leben der Bergbewohner und gleichzeitig die Schönheit der Bergnatur. Die Handlung seiner Prosa ist verwickelt, die Texte sind spannend (Betrüge, Morde) und voller Emotionen (unglückliche Liebe). Schott siedelt seine Geschichten entweder in der Gegenwart an oder greift Themen aus der Geschichte auf - er behandelt zum Beispiel das Schicksal der Choden oder der Künischen Freibauern. In einigen seiner Werke schildert er auch Konflikte zwischen Tschechen und Deutschen im Grenzgebiet. Seine Herangehensweise an das Thema ist manchmal nationalistisch geprägt. Seine Texte sind epigonal - sie folgen wichtigen Vertretern der Heimat- und Grenzlandliteratur (F. Mauthner, H. Strobl, P. Rossegger) und dem großen Autor der Böhmerwaldliteratur A. Stifter. Der Artikel soll den Leser mit diesem unbekannten Autor bekannt machen - er befasst sich mit seinem Leben und Werk, insbesondere mit der Darstellung nationaler Themen in seinem Werk.Item Roses – texte et/ou image: Louise Dupré et Anouk Van Renterghem(2024) Rozlozsnikova, HanaLe recueil Roses de Louise Dupré, poète, romancière et dramaturge québécoise, et d'Anouk Van Renterghem, artiste bruxelloise, met en lumière une synergie convaincante entre les arts-littérature et la peinture. Cette collection colorée engage à la fois l'œil et l'oreille, invitant à une perception musicale de la parole poétique, tout en conservant le parfum d'un printemps particulier. Le recueil Roses se démarque par l'incorporation de l'univers textuel et graphique. Chaque poème est accompagné d'un pastel aux tons roses qui enrichit et complète le texte poétique. L´article se concentre sur les stratégies artistiques facilitant les correspondances, les analogies et l'union des deux composantes principales, le texte et l'image, créant la poétique et l'imaginaire artistique. Les « poèmes-pastels » sont interprétés dans une perspective thématique/symbolique (cf. l'instance de l'imagination) en employant des outils d'analyse sémantique (cf. la théorie de la médiation) et en adoptant un point de vue artistique (cf. le théorie du cercle chromatique, théorie des couleurs additive et soustractive).Item Franz Kafka bei Lenka Reinerová, Alena Wagnerová und Libuše Moníková. Referenzen auf Kafka in den Texten deutsch schreibender Autorinnen mit tschechischem Hintergrund(2023) Balcarová, MarkétaDie Literatur des sogenannten Eastern-Turn, die im 21. Jahrhundert in der deutschsprachigen Migrantenliteratur dominiert, weist unabhängig vom Herkunftsland der AutorInnen thematische Gemeinsamkeiten auf, aber auch auf den Migrationshintergrund des jeweiligen Autors zurückzuführende Unterschiede. Für deutschsprachige AutorInnen mit tschechoslowakischem Hintergrund bildet Franz Kafka einen wichtigen Bezugspunkt. Die Bezüge auf Kafka haben einerseits eine Vermarktungsfunktion – um sich als östliche AutorInnen in (West-)Deutschland durchzusetzen, wird auf diesen weltweit bekannten Landsmann zurückgegriffen. Die Allusionen auf Kafka sind insoweit spezifisch, als sie durch die besondere Rezeption seiner Texte in einem Land mit kommunistischer Diktatur geprägt sind. Darüber hinaus ist die Beschäftigung mit Kafka bei Reinerová, Moníková und Wagnerová genderspezifisch: Sie ist zugleich eine emanzipatorische Auseinandersetzung mit der männlich geprägten Schreibtradition.
