Item Building A More Complex Simulation Model – Cross-Docking Center With Pallet and Box Handling(International Business Information Management Association, 2023) Kresa, Zdeněk; Plevný, MiroslavThe paper focuses on the possibility of using simulations in supply chain management. Specifically, the simulation of logistics technology cross-docking, i.e. transhipment without warehousing, is investigated. The paper examines the suitability of the simulation software Simul8 (Professional version) for modeling a cross-docking center. After theoretical research on the topic, the specified problem and the simulation solution are presented. A simplified simulation model is developed, but it is fully sufficient to discuss the benefits and limitations of the chosen software solution. The main contribution is a description of the main challenges in the modeling process as well as an overall evaluation of the software. Contrary to other studies, not only pallet handling but also sorting at the box level in center is investigated. Exactly this part (hierarchization of entities) seems to be the most difficult part of the modeling. Examined software has a relatively simple and intuitive interface and proved to be suitable for the chosen sophisticated problem but with some limitations. The main limitation is the lack of entity hierarchy capability (and related implications in results). Another potentially problematic issue was the modeling of misplaced boxes and the configuration of collection of boxes (for completing pallets). The correct interpretation of result characteristics also requires higher user effort. The presented simulation model would not be possible to create so precisely in free Simul8 Basic version. Overall, this paper provides valuable information for novice modelers in the field of logistics.Item Building A More Complex Simulation Model – Cross-Docking Center With Pallet and Box Handling(International Business Information Management Association, 2023) Kresa, Zdeněk; Plevný, MiroslavThe paper focuses on the possibility of using simulations in supply chain management. Today’s efforts to achieve a better living environment and to expand more sustainable forms of mobility are closely linked to increasing the attractiveness of public transport systems. One of the widely used ways are advertising campaigns aimed at attracting passengers to public transport vehicles. In this paper, four realized video advertising campaigns (one Danish, three Czech; two focusing on urban public transport, one on train and one on bus regional transport) are presented in more detail. Opinions of representatives of Generation Z from the Czech Republic (more precisely, persons between 19 and 28 years of age; both users and non-users of public transport) were obtained through face-to-face and online surveys. The relationships between video likeability, uselessness, ability to represent reality, ability to improve the image of public transport and ability to attract new passengers to public transport were investigated. It appears that the more “dynamic” campaigns, which do not represent the real situation as much, are generally evaluated to be more useless, while the likeability depends on the execution of the particular campaign. A moderate correlation can be observed between the likeability of a video and its perceived ability to attract new passengers to public transport or at least to improve the public perception of public transport. At the same time, it appears that most of the selected transport campaigns did not reach Generation Z very well (although they were videos presented on social media). The findings suggested in this paper can be used to design advertising campaigns that can better affect Generation Z. In particular, trying to tune in to the “in and cool wave” of the younger generation can be quite counterproductive. Young people’s preference for public transport can be seen as crucial – young people form transport habits that likely prevail for most of their lives.Item Cross-Border Shopping of Czech Citizens Before, During, And After Covid Pandemic: A Quantitative Research(International Business Information Management Association, 2023) Martinčík, David; Martinčíková Sojková, OlgaThis paper delves into an examination of the determinants influencing cross-border shopping behavior among citizens of the Czech Republic. Specifically, the study scrutinizes the dynamic shifts in these determinants across three distinct temporal phases: pre-COVID, during the pandemic, and post-COVID. Employing a consistent methodology, we administered three identical questionnaires to gather comprehensive data during these periods. Throughout the investigation, it became apparent that the Czech Republic experienced a surge in inflation compared to its neighboring nations during the final period under consideration. The proportion of families engaging in cross-border shopping reached its nadir during the COVID period and attained its zenith in the aftermath of the pandemic. This nuanced trend is attributed to the economic repercussions of inflation, compelling many families to transition to international shopping practices. To elucidate these patterns, we employed ordinal logistic regression to assess two pivotal determinants influencing the frequency of cross-border shopping. The geographical distance between residents' abodes and international shopping venues emerged as a salient factor during the COVID period, reflecting heightened apprehensions about long-distance travel. However, this influence substantially waned post-COVID, as domestic inflation rendered cross-border shopping exceptionally advantageous. Furthermore, the significance of family size was pronounced in the pre-COVID era, with larger families exhibiting a proclivity for cross-border shopping. Notably, this correlation diminished during and post-COVID, indicating a leveling effect across family sizes. In summary, families of varying sizes exhibited comparable cross-border shopping frequencies during each period, with a discernible decline during the COVID era and a subsequent resurgence post-pandemic.Item Analysis of Different Simulation Techniques for Solving Queueing Theory Problems(Vydavaťelstvo EKONÓM, 2024) Svoboda, Milan; Říhová, Pavla; Plevný, MiroslavThis study deals with applying and analysing various simulation techniques in solving a problem from queueing theory (mass service system). The motivation for this study is to understand how different characteristics are obtained when using different probability distributions to generate input data. The starting point for this study is unpaired data on the number of units entering the system per unit time and the service time of requests. We modelled the changing intensity of input requirements using step change in intensity and polynomial regression. The service time was modelled by empirical, triangular, and gamma distribution. Combining these approaches, we created six models of a mass service system and identified their characteristics. The characteristics obtained by each model varied very little within statistical variation.Item Will more women in STEM sciences impact economic growth?(GUC - Verlag der Gesellschaft für Unternehmensrechnung und Controlling m.b.H., 2023) Petrenko, OlesyaDespite the fact that on average in the EU there are 4.7% more women than men, female graduates make up around 33% in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) majors in 2020, according to the official Eurostat database. Little research on the relationship between higher education (HE) and gross domestic product (GDP) focused on EU Member States and used various econometric models. The objective of this research is to find variables that associate with economic growth using BMA modelling and to check if they can be robustly associated with GDP. Research rationale: Developed countries may experience challenges limiting them from higher rates of economic growth, and women may often be underrepresented in certain economic activities. If in place, such a situation tends to limit the needs of the global labour market and sustainability commitments. Using available human resources efficiently may help to result in a positive impact on the EU countries’ growth rates. The research at hand aims to explore the relationship between higher education (HE) and economic growth evaluating the impact of STEM tertiary degrees. We attempted to compare male and female graduates of various higher education levels to suggest the importance of creating incentives for women to opt for STEM majors to achieve a fair balance in pay between the genders and possibly produce greater value.Item An analysis of cross-border shopping behavior among Czech citizens in response to the impact of COVID-19 and inflation(GUC - Verlag der Gesellschaft für Unternehmensrechnung und Controlling m.b.H., 2023) Martinčík, David; Martinčíková Sojková, OlgaThis paper investigates the determinants of cross-border shopping among citizens of the Czech Republic across three distinct periods: pre-COVID, during COVID, and post-COVID. Employing identical questionnaires in each period, we observed a notable shift in determinants. During the last period, the Czech Republic experienced heightened inflation compared to neighbouring countries, resulting in a surge in families shopping abroad. Utilizing logistic regression, we analyze two key determinants: distance from abroad and household sizes. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, families have reduced cross-border shopping. This is explicable by the elevation in the regression parameter for distance, the decrease in the parameter for family size, and the diminished statistical significance of these parameters. Conversely, during the inflationary period, there was a marked increase in cross-border shopping, with all families augmenting their shopping abroad. The parameters associated with distance and family size are lower and lack statistical significance during this period.Item Effect of Personality Traits and Social Value Orientation on The Tendency to Dishonesty”: An Empirical Study(International Business Information Management Association, 2023) Martinčík, David; Martinčíková Sojková, OlgaThe tendency for dishonesty and cheating engenders efficiency losses, manifesting in various forms, such as noncompliance with established production protocols or instances of tax evasion. Cumulatively, the compounding effect of numerous small acts of dishonesty culminates in substantial damage. The behavioral economics literature documents that people tend to commit small frauds but rarely resort to large frauds. We conducted a series of wellknown experiments and quasi-experiments measuring propensity to cheat, social orientation, and personality traits. To measure the tendency toward dishonesty, we conducted a coin-flip experiment. Additionally, we utilized quasiexperimental methods to calculate social orientation through a brief six-question version of the Social Value Orientation Measurement and a short ten-question version of the Big Five personality traits. Trust in others was included as an explanatory variable derived from a sender-receiver experiment. Employing Poisson regression analysis, we discern the dependence of the tendency for dishonesty on social orientation. Our findings reveal a correlation between social orientation and the propensity for dishonesty. Specifically, individuals with a more competitive disposition exhibit a heightened inclination to engage in dishonest behaviors compared to their prosocial counterparts. However, our analysis did not detect any dependence on trustworthiness or personality traits to the tendency for dishonesty.Item Analysis of the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in commodity markets(Západočeská univerzita v Plzni, 2024) Malátková, Tereza; Gangur, MikulášThis bibliometric study provides a literature review analyzing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in commodity markets. This study compares linear and nonlinear models for explaining behavioral data obtained through a laboratory experiment with economics students at the University of West Bohemia.Participants chose between honest production at a higher cost or dishonest production to save costs. The experiment varied inspection probabilities and introduced punishment for dishonesty or rewards for honesty. Personality traits (MBTI) and risk aversion (Holt-Laury measurement) were also assessed. Both linear and nonlinear (GAM, neural networks) models produced similar results. Increased inspection significantly reduced dishonesty (p < 0.01), while punishment and reward had no significant effect (p > 0.10). Thinking-oriented individuals were more prone to dishonesty (p ≈ 0.05), and higher risk aversion correlated with lower dishonest behavior (p ≈ 0.10). All models achieved a similar power to predict dishonest behavior.Item Supporting Young Farmers Within The Common Agricultural Policy(University of Žilina, The Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications, Department of Economics, 2022) Hinke, Jana; Nový, MilošResearch background: The Common Agricultural Policy (“CAP”) accounts for the largest share of the EU expenditure. The original rules of CAP are in force until December 2022, then the latest reform will come into effect until 2027. One of the top ten objectives is to support young farmers with at least 3% of the budget. Purpose of the article: This raises the question of how the CAP direct payment funds were distributed to young farmers under the original rules, or rather how their support will change from 2023. The paper assesses the amount of direct payments to young farmers and describes the supporting arguments by reviewing recent studies from scientific databases. Methods: The analysis of five-year period (2015-2019) was carried out, focusing primarily on the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The authors also compare the situation with the other countries of the Visegrad Group and the founding members of the EU. The statistical yearbooks of CAP of the European Commission are the data source. Findings & Value added: The CR and Slovakia do not show the same trend in the support for young farmers from direct payments. The method of calculating direct support is also different. The analysis has not revealed any unifying elements common to the Visegrad Group countries or to the EU founding members. Thus, this finding points to national approaches in determining direct support for young farmers. An increase in direct support to 3% will mean a substantial increase, with the CR and Slovakia experiencing the biggest change.Item Relationship between social value orientation and the tendency to trust others(Západočeská univerzita v Plzni, 2022) Martinčík, David; Šlechtová Sojková, OlgaTrust in others is essential for people's collaboration and has considerable economic effects. Trust can be measured in many economic laboratory experiments. We conducted the sender-receiver experiment where the receiver trusted or not the message delivered by the sender. The simple social value orientation test with six questions measured social preferences on a scale from altruistic to competitive behavior. We found that altruistic people tend to trust more, while competitive people tend to trust less.Item Carsharing a další formy sdílené mobility: případová studie z Plzně(Západočeská univerzita, 2022) Kresa, Zdeněk; Heyes, AdamSdílená ekonomika je fenoménem dnešní doby. Item Srovnávací analýza Dynare v Matlabu a Pythonu: Posouzení možností a omezení Pythonu pro modelování DSGE(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2024) Rottenbornová, Lucie; Taušl Procházková, Petra; Martinčík, David; Martinčíková Sojková, OlgaItem Disruptive innovation concept in selected EU countries(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2024) Krechovská, Michaela; Mičudová, Kateřina; Špaček, Miroslav; Vacík, EmilItem Comparison of linear and nonlinear models in explanation of dishonest behavior(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2024) Martinčíková Sojková, Olga; Martinčík, DavidItem Analysis of the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in commodity markets(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2024) Malátková, Tereza; Gangur, MikulášItem Vehicle routing problem with cross-docking as part of industry 4.0 logistics(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2022) Papoušková, Květa; Kresa, ZdeněkItem Relationship between social value orientation and the tendency to trust others(Faculty of Economics University of West Bohemia, 2022) Martinčík, David; Šlechtová Sojková, Olga; Kresa, Zdeněk
