Abstract
This study is focused on numerical as well as experimental investigation of free surface flows during gravity casting processes. The numerical simulations are based on an in-house implementation of the lattice Boltzmann method and results of the implemented algorithm are validated against the measured experimental data. In order to capture the free surface of an incompressible fluid, the algorithm based on the volume of fluid method is adopted. In addition, a surface tension term is included. The suggested computational algorithm is capable of capturing well an evolution of the free-surface flow during gravity casting as shown by comparison of results of the performed numerical simulations and experimental measurements.
