Abstract
Popular physics experiments include the so-called lightning arrester, where, using a transformer with coils with (typically) 600 primary and 12,000 secondary turns, we achieve a voltage of up to 4,600 V when powered from the mains. What consequences would touching one of the parts of the lightning arrester have during operation? We try to answer this question using experiments with floating ground, capacitive coupling and related phenomena.
