dc.description.abstract-translatedHistorically, agriculture was an important sector of the economy with a high share on employment and GDP. Industrialization, globalization, economic development, and technological progress are reducing the importance of agriculture in the EU in terms of the main macroeconomic indicators. In 2020, approximately 4.2% of EU's total employment, estimated 8.8 million people, worked in agriculture. The share of agriculture on EU's GDP was 1.4% and has remained stable over the last 20 years. The situation is different in individual Member States. The paper evaluates and compares the development of agricultural employment in Slovakia, Czechia, Slovenia, and France. We also relate employment in agriculture to agricultural production and the level of productivity. Our results show that employment in agriculture is affected by the rate of substitution of human labour by capital, the size of existing farms as well as the structure of agricultural productionen
