Critical Points of Using the BYOD Strategy at Primary Schools

Abstract

The strategy of Bring own your devices (BYOD) is called Přines si své vlastní zařízení in Czech. It has been widely discussed recently. It means that students work with their own mobile devices, which they have brought themselves, during the lessons. The importance of mobile devices in teaching has been confirmed during the CoVid-19 pandemic situation. Pupils at Czech primary schools have been learning distantly for almost a year now. A smartphone or a tablet are often their main educational tools. Nevertheless, there are many questions about the BYOD strategy and it is not always considered to be useful by teachers. In this article, we present the result of a questionnaire survey that dealt with the use of this strategy at primary schools in Pilsen. We asked 200 respondents, 49 % of whom answered they had heard of the BYOD strategy for the first time in this questionnaire. Only 27 % of respondents actually use the strategy in their classes. We were interested in the obstacles, ie why the strategy is not used more often. Insufficient teacher competencies, concerns about cybersecurity, the quality of school network, the lack of facilities, etc. appeared most often among the answers. Based on this information, we identified 6 critical points that could help involve the BYOD strategy in teaching. Subsequently, an infographic was created to help teachers overcome possible obstacles in the BYOD strategy integration in the classes. 32 % of the teachers, who have not used the strategy yet, would like to start using it. The CoVid-19 pandemic and the closure of schools certainly play a role. This situation has compelled pupils and teachers to use modern technologies more often, and also to master work with educational and communication applications relatively fast. In our questionnaire, teachers admit that they would like to work with some of the online tools they learnt using at the time of distance learning, also when they are back to school. We would like to support these teachers with the infographics mentioned above.

Bring own your devices (BYOD), česky přines si své vlastní zařízení. Tato strategie je v poslední době velmi diskutovaná. Její princip spočívá v tom, že žáci během výuky pracují na vlastních mobilních zařízeních, která si přinesli. Význam mobilních zařízení ve výuce v současné době potvrzuje situace okolo pandemie CoVid-19, kdy se žáci v českých základních školách vzdělávají v podstatě rok distančně. Smartphone nebo tablet je mnohdy jejich hlavní vzdělávací pomůckou. Přesto ale okolo strategie BYOD visí mnoho otazníků a ne všechny školy se k jejímu využívání staví kladně. V tomto článku představíme výsledky dotazníkového šetření, které se zabývalo využitím zmíněné strategie na základních školách v Plzni. Získali jsme 200 respondentů, z nichž 49 % uvedlo, že o strategii BYOD slyšelo poprvé v tomto dotazníku. Pouze 27 % dotázaných pak strategii opravdu používá ve své výuce. Zajímaly nás překážky, tedy proč není strategie využívána více. Mezi reakcemi se nejčastěji objevovaly nedostatečné kompetence učitelů, obavy o kyberbezpečnost, kvalita školní sítě, nedostatek využitelných zařízení atd. Na základě těchto informací jsme identifikovali 6 kritických míst zapojení strategie BYOD do výuky. Následně byla pro překonání těchto kritických míst vytvořena infografika, která by měla pedagogům pomoci případné překážky při začlenění strategie BYOD do výuky pomoci překonat. Z učitelů, kteří strategii dosud nevyužívají, by 32 % rádo začalo. Svoji roli jistě hraje také pandemie CoVid-19 a uzavření škol. Tato situace přinutila žáky i učitele více využívat moderní technologie, poměrně rychle si osvojit práci se vzdělávacími a komunikačními aplikacemi. Učitelé v našem dotazníku připouští, že by rádi s některými online nástroji, které poznali v době distanční výuky, pracovali i při běžném provozu škol. Zmíněnou infografikou bychom tyto učitele rádi podpořili.
