| dc.description.abstract-translated | The article explores multilingualism used in the novel by the Anglo-Indian writer Arundhati Roy The God of Small Things (1997). Language in the novel becomes a communication link between characters from different castes, whom, on the one hand, frees from traditional social and geographic stereotypes, but on the other hand, perceives them through the lens of these stereotypes. English serves as a unifying language factor, viewed not only as a (post)-colonial language but also as one of the two official languages of the Indian Federation and the international language. Roy interlaces the English narrative with Malayalam, or precisely speaking, with Malayalam words, phrases and sentences, for which she either provides English equivalents or lets them untranslated. English and Malayalam intertwine, indicating thus linguistic and cultural hybridization. However, the author does not aim to merely render local colour or using the language as a (mere) communication tool, but to emphasize the role of language as a means of understanding the cultural world of its users. | en |
