dc.description.abstract-translatedThis paper examines the relationship between regional income convergence in Germany and the behavior of Czech cross-border commuters. Using a balanced panel of German NUTS 3 regions for the period 2000–2022, based on primary household income per capita from official regional accounts, we estimate standard β- and σ-convergence models to assess whether initially poorer regions, particularly those in eastern Germany, are catching up with richer western regions. We complement these results with 2023 district-level data on Czech commuters from the German Federal Employment Agency’s Pendleratlas. We find statistically significant β- and σ-convergence, indicating faster income growth in initially poorer regions and a gradual decline in regional income dispersion. Moreover, regions with higher income growth and lower initial income correlate with the counts of Czech commuters. However, given the small share of commuters in regional labour forces, we interpret this pattern as growth pulling commuters rather than commuters driving growth.en
