Abstract
William Thomson by se na konci června 2024 dožil dvě stě let. V 19. století patřil tento irský fyzik k nejvýznamnějším evropským matematikům a přírodovědcům. Za svého života napsal 661 publikací a přihlásil na sedmdesát patentů. Radost z objevování ho přivedla k vynálezům,které posunuly hranice lidského poznání ve fyzice nízkých teplot, v termodynamice, v atmosférické elektřině nebo v přenosu elektrické energie (podmořským kabelem).
William Thomson would have lived to be two hundred years old at the end of June 2024. In the 19th century, this Irish physicist was one of the most important European mathematicians and natural scientists. During his lifetime, he wrote 661 publications and applied for seventy patents. The joy of discovery led him to inventions, which pushed the boundaries of human knowledge in low-temperature physics, in thermodynamics, in atmospheric electricity or in the transmission of electrical energy (by submarine cable).
