Review: Aiste Celkyte, The Stoic Theory of Beauty

Abstract

The book under review, The Stoic Theory of Beauty by Aiste Celkyte, attempts to reconstruct Stoic aesthetics, or more precisely, to find the Stoic concept of beauty. The author is convinced that despite the fact that Stoic thinkers considered beauty to be indifferent, it had a certain value for them. She also shows that it is possible to extract from the extant texts a specific conception of beauty as a functionally compositional entity. For the Stoics, according to Celkyte, beauty was associated with a certain internal arrangement (or proportionality), and at the same time such an arrangement had to be functional with respect to the fulfillment of the end of the object in question. The present review traces how the author arrives at the formulation of this aesthetic theory and considers the problems that this approach entails.

Recenzovaná kniha The Stoic Theory of Beauty od Aiste Celkyte se pokouší o rekonstrukci stoické estetiky, přesněji řečeno o nalezení stoického pojetí krásy. Autorka je přesvědčena, že navzdory tomu, že stoičtí myslitelé považovali krásu za indiferentní, pro ně měla jistou hodnotu. Rovněž ukazuje, že je možno z dochovaných textů extrahovat specifické pojetí krásy jako funkčně kompozičního celku. Podle Celkyte byla pro stoiky krása spojena s určitým vnitřním uspořádáním (či proporcionalitou), a zároveň takové uspořádání muselo být funkční vzhledem k naplnění cíle dané věci. Předkládaná recenze sleduje, jakým způsobem autorka k formulaci této estetické teorie dospívá, a zamýšlí se nad problémy, které s sebou tento postup nese.
