Abstract
The aim of this text is to analyze the image of the herder in the Central European imagination in the first half of the 20th century. A sample of 21 period postcards picturing pastoralists are analyzed. The period of the study corresponds with the formation of a vivid image of the Balkans in the Central European imagination. The focus is on the production of postcards in response to the demand of Western audiences. The paper also analyzes how pastoralists were broadly depicted as solitary male cultural heroes surrounded by the wild mountains. Such imagery attempted to create an image of detachedness and archaism, the main features that Europeans thought differentiated themselves from the inhabitants of the Balkans.
