Cross-curricular realitons in the teaching of mathematics and other subjects at elementary school

Abstract

Mathematics is considered by pupils of the first classes of Czech elementary schools to be one of the most popular subjects in the school. Over time, however, this popularity among pupils declines, which may be partially caused by excessive abstraction and the "detachment" of mathematics from real life. Nevertheless, it is possible to use the connection of mathematics with other subjects, especially with science subjects. In order to show and evaluate the possibilities of these connections, a set of 14 lesson-preparations connecting mathematics was created. These lesson-preparations involved, for example, biology (calculation of an amount of water that a piece of moss can hold, observation of differences and similarities between Phasmatodea and Pholcidae), physics (calculation of gravity on the planets of the Solar system), geography (comparison and calculation with heights of the Czech mountains), Czech language (work with numerals and numbers in the text of the Czech fairytale Rákosníček a hvězdy), etc. The verification of the prepared worksheets took place in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade (pupils of age from 6 to 12 years) of the Elementary school Jílové u Prahy, Central Bohemian Region, Czech Republic, and was supplemented with activities reflections from teachers who led teaching according to the supplied preparations for the lesson.Žáky prvních tříd českých základních škol je matematika považována za jeden z nejoblíbenějších předmětů. Časem však tato oblíbenost mezi žáky klesá, což může být z části způsobeno přílišnou mírou abstrakce a „odtržením“ matematiky od reálného života. Přitom je možné ve výuce využít propojení matematiky s dalšími vyučovacími předměty, především s předměty přírodovědnými. S cílem ukázat a zhodnotit možnosti těchto propojení byla vytvořena sada 14 příprav na hodiny spojujících matematiku například s biologií, fyzikou, historií, českým jazykem apod. Ověření připravených pracovních listů proběhlo v 1., 3., 4. a 5. ročníku (žáci rozptylu věku od 6 do 12 let) ZŠ Jílové u Prahy (Středočeský kraj, Česká republika) a bylo doplněno reflexí aktivit učitelů, kteří výuku podle dodaných příprav na hodinu vedli.
