dc.description.abstract-translatedThe sharing economy (SE) is a promising, innovative and dynamic sector with great scope for further growth at global and national levels. From a global perspective, the potential of SE is expected to grow in the coming years along with the internet and smartphone penetration, the development of digital literacy and the overall digitalisation of society. The main objective of this paper is to identify, analyse, evaluate and discuss the current state of research on SE on the African continent over the last decade. An integral part of the research is an assessment of selected positive impacts of the application of sharing economy principles in African countries. The methodological approach used in the research is based on a systematic search of scholarly articles from Web of Science, Scopus, Crossref and Google Scholar databases. The aim was to assess the current state of research on SE in Africa and how it is understood by relevant scholars and academics. Our study revealed the following key findings: firstly, most of the articles are published by researchers based in South Africa (14 papers); secondly, most of the articles focus on South Africa (18 papers); and thirdly, Uber was the one company that most researchers were interested in (18 papers). The majority of articles (26) were dedicated to mobility and 8 to accommodation, other segments were hardly explored. SE research and its application in Africa has the potential to support micro-entrepreneurship, employment and economic development. This paper fills a gap in the area of research dedicated to SE in Africa, presenting the results of a systematic literature review as a basis for future research focusing on the potential of SE on the African continent.en
