Michal Slavata, Utraquist Humanist and a Spy, and His Wittenberg Orationes

Abstract

The paper is dedicated to translation of the Latin oration Oratio de Hussiticis motibus (A Speech on the Hussite Movement) by Michal Slavata (c. 1554–after 1577), Baron of Chlum and Koschumberg, which he gave in 1571 as a rector in Wittenberg. It is accompanied by an introduction, which focuses especia ly on the connection between Philip Sidney, Hubert Languet, and the Slavata family in the context of politico-religious tensions, as we l as Michal Slavata's importance for the Sidney circle and Philip Sidney himself; an editorial note; a transcription of the Latin oration; and its translation into English.
