Manuscript cookbooks on the move: social functions, heritage management and women’s narratives in the Czech-Bavarian Borderland

Abstract

This paper explores how personal manuscript cookbooks perform social functions related to memory and identity. The presented outputs are based on a case study carried out in the Czech-Bavarian borderland which represents an interesting case of a heterogeneous population formed due to postwar displacement and population shifts. The research methodology is based on archival research, written narratives, participant observation and semi-structured/unstructured interviews. The theoretical framework draws on the field of remembering, belonging and identity , emphasis on food and identity (Lakhtikova 2017; Theophano 2003) as well on as material culture and microhistory (Pennel, 2018) which enable understanding of complex relationships between food, culture and belonging. The primary research ambition is focused on cookbooks as a tool for remembering – and forgetting – and a medium for recalling and reconnecting with a lost past. The main issue discussed here is the functions of cookbooks used by individuals (and more particularly women) in interconnected processes of (re)creating different levels of identity and belonging (gender, family and collective). Through the language of manuscripts and interviews the agency and power of their writers to construct their own subjectivity, negotiate their roles and identities within specific social and cultural structures could be reconstructed.

Tento článek zkoumá, jak osobní rukopisné kuchařky plní sociální funkce související s pamětí a identitou. Prezentované výstupy vycházejí z případové studie realizované v česko-bavorském pohraničí, která představuje zajímavý případ heterogenní populace vzniklé v důsledku poválečného vysídlení a přesunů populace. Metodologie výzkumu je založena na archivním výzkumu, písemných narativech, zúčastněném pozorování a polostrukturovaných/nestrukturovaných rozhovorech. Teoretický rámec čerpá z oblasti zapamatování, sounáležitosti a identity, důraz na jídlo a identitu (Lakhtikova 2017; Theophano 2003) a také na materiální kulturu a mikrohistorii (Pennel, 2018), které umožňují pochopení složitých vztahů mezi jídlem, kulturou a patřící. Primární výzkumná ambice je zaměřena na kuchařky jako nástroj pro zapamatování – a zapomínání – a médium pro připomenutí a opětovné spojení se ztracenou minulostí. Hlavní diskutovanou otázkou jsou funkce kuchařek, které jednotlivci (a zejména ženy) používají v propojených procesech (znovu)vytváření různých úrovní identity a sounáležitosti (gender, rodina a kolektiv). Prostřednictvím jazyka rukopisů a rozhovorů bylo možné rekonstruovat působnost a sílu jejich autorů konstruovat vlastní subjektivitu, vyjednávat o svých rolích a identitách v rámci specifických sociálních a kulturních struktur.
