ESP Needs Analysis for Language Courses Redesign: A Case-Study from the University of West Bohemia
(Filodiritto Publisher, 2021) Petrenko, Olesya; Wroblewski, Bartlomiej
Given the rapid development of engineering technology and the internationalisation of the Czech labour market, good command of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) among engineers appears to be of crucial importance. In this study, the students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FST) were asked to comment on their needs and expectations about the content of the English courses they are provided with. These perceptions may greatly help to re-develop and innovate the English for Mechanical Engineering and Academic English courses offered by the Institute of Applied Language Studies at the University of West Bohemia, and engage students and teachers in effective language practice. The case-study method and sequential design were chosen in order to elaborate quality questionnaires to gather the results on students’ needs, wants and expectations concurrently. The responses to the survey were evaluated via frequency, correlation and factor analyses. The factor analysis intended to confirm the two unobserved dimensions represented by the survey which were labeled as “Pursuing further education” and “Finding a job”. Indeed, if students wish to pursue further education, they do not think about using their English at work and they are interested in learning about writing and citing sources correctly. The results of our study require further research and verification. This will be done by applying mixed research methods and interviewing selected students who took part in the questionnaire. The final step of the research will be to compare the current results with the feedback received from graduate students and prospective employers. The received conclusions are believed to result in developing modern high-quality language courses that will appeal to motivated students and their teachers.

Identifying learning strategies and needs of the students in their L2 acquisition at the University of West Bohemia: A case study
(Filodiritto Publisher, 2021) Petrenko, Olesya; Habac, Arniel; Havránková, Tereza
The use of different learning strategies by language learners is indisputably one of the many crucial factors that can greatly influence the second language (L2) acquisition process. By exploring these strategies and their practical application to language learning, students and teachers can be provided with a tool that is both reciprocal and collaborative. As the language level of university students increases, it is crucial to provide them with new and adequate approaches to further enhance their language level and ensure that they know how to improve their L2 skills before entering the job market. This paper aims to critically examine the different learning strategies and acquire a better understanding of the needs, expectations, and challenges of the students at the University of West Bohemia in order to adjust the courses and fulfill the needs and expectations of these students. The first part of the article delves on the theoretical background of the different kinds of learning strategies and summarizes the outcomes of recent studies in this area. This part also introduces the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) that was chosen by the researchers as the framework for measuring the students` learning strategies. The second part of the article presents the research design and hypotheses of the research, which will be conducted at the University of West Bohemia for the period covering the academic year of 2020/2021.

The Perception of Cyberbullying by Adolescents in Rural and Urban Spain
(Springer, 2022) Pardo Ramos, Claudia; Torres-Toukoumidis, Angel; Caldeiro Pedreira, Mari Carmen; Havránková, Tereza
Případy šikany jsou stále závažnější v souvislosti s používáním informačních a komunikačních technologií, zejména s ponořením do sociálních sítí, což vytváří situaci kyberšikany.
