Towards Successful Integration of Small Satellites into the Terrestrial IoT Networks
(University of West Bohemia, 2023) Al-Anbagi, Haidar Najim Abbod; Veřtát, Ivo
Nowadays, countless daily life services are conveniently provided to the users by connecting billions of devices through Internet of Things (IoT). However, current IoT networks are not yet ubiquitous. They are unavailable in the less inhabited areas such as oceans, forests, and deserts. Accordingly, for omnipresent coverage of the future generations of communications, satellites must get integrated into IoT networks. Because of their low altitude, low earth orbit (LEO) satellites have attracted attention towards the integration in the terrestrial IoT networks. Nonetheless, most of the recently launched LEO satellites are tiny ones designed to provide affordable space missions. CubeSats, for instance, are popular LEO satellites with limited size and resources. These limitations imply low transmitting power and low gain onboard antennas. As a result, the relevant receiving ground stations (GSs) would have to utilize high gain antennas with expensive and complex steering resources to receive such weak signals. This article suggests a GS-based solution by applying the receive diversity combining approach. To prove the concept, this work utilized the GSs community of Satellite Networked Open Ground Station (SatNOGS) to record real satellite signals. The combining resulted in an enhanced quality stream in terms of detection errors compared to each individual GS. Indeed, the combining gain can compensate the missing gain if the traditional expensive receiving antenna with its complex steering mechanism is replaced by cheaper omnidirectional antenna.

Measurement of Shielding Effectiveness Using Near Field Probes
(Západočeská univerzita v Plzni, 2023) Sedláček, Jan
In this paper will be described the possibility of performing shielding effectiveness measurement using the near field probes. Currently used methods require a special equipment and usually an anechoic chamber. This makes the measurement more expensive and requires a longer time to get the results. Using the near field probes is a very simple way, how to get results but it also have several limits and effects which can affect the measurement results.

Synchronization of bus frames during USB transfer
(World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, 2024) Šimek, Petr
This work deals with the problem of synchronization of bus frames during transmission using USB (Universal Serial Bus). The principles for synchronization between USB and the non-deterministic CAN (Controller Area Network) bus will be described here. Furthermore, the work deals with ensuring the time sequence of communication frames when receiving from multiple communication bus channels. The structure of a general object for storing frames from different types of communication buses such as CAN and LIN (Local Interconnect Network) will be described here. Finally, an evaluation of the communication throughput of bus frames for USB High speed will be performed. The creation of this architecture was based on the analysis of the communication of control units with a large number of communication buses. For the design of the architecture, a test HW with a USB-HS interface was used, which received previously known messages, which were compared with the received result. The result of this investigation is the block architecture of the control program for test HW ensuring correct data transmission via the USB bus.

Noncoherent Combining of Small Satellites Signals – Proof of Concept
(IEEE, 2023) Al-Anbagi, Haidar Najim Abbod; Veřtát, Ivo
Internet of Things (IoT) networks connect billions of devices in endless daily applications. However, the IoT networks lack coverage in less populated areas such as oceans, deserts, forests, and rural, isolated regions. Therefore, future generations of communications must get satellites involved for ubiquitous coverage of IoT networks. The Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are the closest to the earth and hence the best option to get engaged; nevertheless, they are often small satellites with limited resources. Consequently, such satellites create a challenging task at related Ground Stations (GSs) to receive, process, and decode their weak signals. This article presents a receive diversity combining technique as a solution for simple and cheap GS to improve the reception quality of small satellites' weak signals. To validate the suggested technique, the current study combined real small satellite signals from multiple GSs registered at the open-source Satellite Networked Open Ground Station (SatNOGS) global network. The results showed that combining multiple replicas of the satellite signals can significantly improve the link quality.

Using of LPDA Antenna for UFA Evaluation in Radiated Immunity Test
(University of West Bohemia, 2023) Almtrod, Abdalghfor Abdalghfar A; Kubík, Zdeněk
This article presents a fast method to evaluate the immunity test’s Uniform Test Area (UFA) points in the 1 –6 GHz frequency range. The proposed method uses an antenna as a sensor instead of a common E-field probe to check the UFA. This method has proved its ability to quickly determine the possibility of using this transmitting antenna during an immunity test by evaluating the maximum difference level between the UFA points in both E and H-directions. The electric and magnetic field intensities have been measured by orienting the printed log periodic dipole array (PLPDA) antenna vertically and horizontally. Moreover, this method was applied on a stacked antenna operating from 0.8 GHz to 6 GHz to show its validity as a reference antenna for the immunity test.

Pre-detection Combining of Small Satellite Downlink's Replicas
(IEEE, 2022) Al-Anbagi, Haidar Najim Abbod; Veřtát, Ivo
This study contributes to the reception quality improvement of small satellites' signals. Traditionally, the data from a satellite is downloaded through single radio link to the related steerable ground station. This single communication is problematic as it is highly exposed to outages when the channel is deeply affecting the signal or when the steering engine fails. Instead, this paper proposes a terrestrial solution by combining multiple raw replicas of the same downlink received by separate multiple receiving sites. The individual stations are networked to collect multiple raw versions and send them to a virtual ground station for processing and combining. The suggested receive-diversity combining of the raw symbols is promising to improve the performance of the ground stations and reduce the probability of singular site failures. The proposed receive diversity scheme offers the replacement of the conventional expensive steerable antenna by much affordable omnidirectional antenna where the diversity gain compensates the lesser antenna gain. To achieve this diversity payoff, a simple yet efficient pre-detection combining algorithm is also developed in this article. The results show that the diversity mode, under different testing scenarios, can achieve lesser bit error rate (BER) than every other BER in the network. Furthermore, the cooperative reception scheme reduces system outages and exhibits to track more than a satellite at once.
