dc.description.abstract-translated | In recent years a dynamic development of the concurrent design methodology oriented at various requirements of the product life cycle has been witnessed in the engineering design area, and this approach has been more and more widely applied. Design for X was developed in this trend (where X stands for various requirements of the product life cycle) and became a base for introducing competitive products to the market. In design for X (DfX) important aspects of X are: manufacturing, assembly, reliability, ergonomics, recycling, reuse and others. Including these (and other, not specified before) requirements at the stage of engineering design provides efficient product structures adapted to meeting expectations of customers and manufacturers. Nevertheless, ensuring all the expected functions and features is difficult due to the fact that some of the requirements are contradictory, e.g. quality – price, manufacturing cost effectiveness – ease of assembly, reliability – product complexity and others. Therefore, engineering design is a complex process that consists in devising an optimal product structure that will provide compromise solutions between the market expectations and capabilities and economic factors of the manufacturer. One of the most important of plenty of DfX approaches is design for assembly (DfA). It is characterised by adapting the designed product structure to a simple, fast and inexpensive assembly process of its components. The structure must also meet the expectations of all the established functions of the product. The following thesis deals with the methodology of design for assembly as one of the most important and widespread approaches practically applied in the industry conditions. In connection with existing methods and developed DfA instruments, two viewpoints on the application of DfA methodology were proposed. The first of them is related to the product complexity analysis including DfA principles, directed especially at decreasing the designed product complexity, mostly through minimisation of its components. Moreover, the analysis is destined to select proper principles of design for assembly and assigning them to design proper structure nodes - connections of two components. The thesis presents application of the complexity analysis on the actual example. The other viewpoint on the DfA aspects presented in this thesis is their application in selecting the most favourable assembly sequence (order in which the components are connected). In the developed approach the principles of design for assembly are used to evaluate the assembly connections and further to valuate the determined assembly sequences in order to choose the best solution. DfA viewpoints described in the thesis are characterised by the possibility of applying them at the early design stages, namely at the conceptual design stage. It is a distinguishing feature of the proposed approaches in comparison to the existing and popular DfA viewpoints, which are earmarked chiefly for the analysis of completed product designs. The propositions expressed in this thesis can, among others, be used to prepare variants of the designed product concepts and selection of the best one, and to determine the most favourable assembly sequence at an early stage. The advantage of this approach is an early inclusion of the assembly process requirements that eliminates expensive changes (which appear at the latter stages of the product life cycle). Furthermore, early selection of the optimal assembly sequence meets the demands of concurrent design and provides the possibility of the assembly process concurrent planning in the product design. | en |
