dc.description.abstract-translatedUsing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the article examines the argumentation and discursive strategies employed by the UK’s post-2010 Conservative governments to justify a programme of comprehensive welfare reform aimed at reducing spending and achieving higher levels of employment. Special attention is paid to the tensions between the governmental rhetoric and Britain’s socio-economic realities, especially labour market precarity and the vulnerabilities of some claimant groups. The analysis is based on a corpus of sources including political speeches, policy papers, media articles, charity reports and academic literature.en
