dc.description.abstract-translatedNon-contact measurement of mechanical vibrations is essential for lightly damped or low-mass systems, since contact sensors can introduce additional mass or artificial damping. In some scenarios, computer vision utilising digital cameras can offer a versatile and cost-effective alternative to laser interferometers. However, common object- and feature-tracking algorithms can be susceptible to drift, which is a gradual accumulation of frame to frame errors. This paper presents a mask-based object tracking method that processes digital video using a localised search strategy and a reference-based cost function. The method is experimentally validated on two oscillating systems using a smartphone camera.en
