| dc.description.abstract-translated | Pottery is the most abundant type of artifact found during archeological excavations of the High and Late Middle Ages. The aim of this article is to briefly summarize historical periods of former and contemporary pottery research, the methods that have been used in research development, and what issues are given priority. The four fundamental periods in the research of medieval pottery in the Czech Republic are defined in the first section of the article. The second section focuses on contemporary descriptive systems as the most common type of methods applied in the research of high and late medieval pottery. The third section deals with the terminology surrounding ceramic categories and attributes. Determining categories is mostly based on macroscopic description of ceramic composition and technological attributes, which are still the main descriptive category in contemporary descriptive systems. | en |
