| dc.description.abstract-translated | The year 1938 is one of the most critical milestones in modern Czechoslovak history. This was especially the case in its ethnically mixed areas, and Western Bohemia was no exception. Here too, 1938 was marked by a permanent political and national crisis with two significant epicenters, May and September. These milestones were mainly related to the ever-increasing pressure of the local German population, represented primarily by the Sudeten German Party of Konrad Henlein, on the Czechoslovak authorities, the local Czech minority, and on politically differently oriented fellow citizens of German nationality. The goal of the pressure was initially the autonomy of the German-populated areas of Czechoslovakia, but after the situation escalated in early autumn, it was only the Heim ins Reich policy, i.e. the incorporation of these areas into Nazi Germany. This did indeed happen in the end, and from the beginning of October, a considerable part of Western Bohemia gradually became part of Hitler’s Third Reich. These processes were associated with coercion, hatred and violence, ended the centuries-long coexistence of Czechs and Germans in one state entity and permanently marked the relations between them. | en |
