L1 Influence in L2 English Acquisition: Corpus-Based Insights from Czech and Slavic Learners

| dc.description.abstract-translated | This paper examines how the first language (L1) influences second language (L2) acquisition among Czech and other Slavic learners of English. L1 interference varies across domains, with effects most pronounced in syntax and morphology. Using a learner corpus of written reflections, the study captures both linguistic output and learners’ metalinguistic awareness of L1-related challenges (Odlin, 1989). The corpus reveals consistent transfer patterns, including article omission, reduced use of discourse-markers, and syntactic simplification (Trenkic, 2009; Schiffrin, 1987; Jucker & Ziv, 1998; Bi & Tan, 2024).
