Composer Jan Vičar

Abstract

The article presents Jan Vičar (1949), a university teacher, musicologist, organizer and composer, who is one of the leading personalities of contemporary Czech music and musicology. He spent most of his professional life at the Palacký University in Olomouc. Since 1980, he has also been teaching at the Music Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He is currently the guarantor of doctoral studies at the Department of Music Education and Culture of the Faculty of Education of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the editor-in-chief of the English-language magazine Paedagogia Musica.In the field of musicology, he focuses on musical aesthetics, music criticism, theory, history, aesthetics of Czech music of the 20th century, the work of Leoš Janáček and critical music editions. He published more than 200 works in both Czech and foreign magazines and anthologies. He is the author or co-author of nine professional books published in the Czech Republic and the USA. The personality of Jan Vičar is characterized by the breadth of interests and the resulting number of scientific, artistic and organizational activities. In addition to all his activities, Prof. Vičar never stopped devoting himself to composing. Among more than 120 compositions, we find both vocal compositions for solo voices or for all types of choirs (see below), as well as instrumental - orchestral or chamber compositions for various instruments. His compositional work is characterized by its considerably wide range of genres, styles and functions, both folklore inspirations and jazz elements appear, as well as contemporary rational compositional techniques.Příspěvek představuje vysokoškolského pedagoga, hudebního vědce, organizátora a hudebního skladatele Jana Vičara (1949), jež patří k předním osobnostem současné české hudby a hudební vědy. Většinu svého profesního života strávil na Univerzitě Palackého v Olomouci. Od r. 1980 vyučuje zároveň na Hudební akademii múzických umění v Praze. V současnosti je garantem doktorského studia na Katedře hudební výchovy a kultury Pedagogické fakulty Západočeské univerzity v Plzni a šéfredaktorem v angličtině vydávaného časopisu Paedagogia Musica.V oblasti muzikologie se zaměřuje na hudební estetiku, hudební kritiku, teorii, dějiny, estetiku české hudby 20. století, na dílo Leoše Janáčka a na kritické hudební edice. Publikoval více než 200 prací jak v českých, tak i v zahraničních časopisech a sbornících. Je autorem nebo spoluautorem devíti odborných knih vydaných v Čechách i v USA. Osobnost Jana Vičara charakterizuje šíře zájmů a z ní vyplývající množství vědeckých, uměleckých a organizačních aktivit. Vedle všech svých aktivit se prof. Vičar nikdy nepřestal věnovat skladatelské tvorbě. Mezi více než 120 skladbami nacházíme jak skladby vokální pro sólové hlasy nebo pro všechny typy sborů (viz dále), tak i instrumentální – orchestrální, nebo komorní pro různé nástroje. Jeho kompoziční dílo je charakteristické svým značně širokým žánrovým, stylovým i funkčním rozpětím se objevují jak folklórní inspirace, či jazzové prvky, tak i soudobé racionální kompoziční techniky.
