Abstract
The punishment of suspension for clergy, which prohibited the exercise of office, sacramental power or the right to any benefice, is found very early in the Church. Even though at first it was not clearly distinguished from other punishments, in Christian antiquity it already contained all the elements that it had until the first codification in 1917. Suspension was not clearly distinguished from other censures until the High Middle Ages, but this distinction did not affect any change regarding the form of suspension, which continued unaltered until the codification of 1983.
