dc.description.abstract-translatedThe state tries to increase the speed of criminal proceedings in many ways. One of them is the regulation of criminal procedural law. Above the particular pro cedural provisions related to the speed of proceedings, the Code of Criminal Procedure contains a general formulation of the principle of the speedy crim inal proceedings. This paper analyses it and attempts to answer the question of whether the Code of Criminal Procedure regulates the requirement of speed as a independent fundamental principle of criminal procedure, and what the implications of this statutory conception are for the principle‘s existence. It can be summarised that the Code of Criminal Procedure does not regulate the requirement of speed as a independent fundamental principle, but rather as part of the the principle of ex officio proceedings, or at least in close connec tion with it. However, this conception is based on the theoretical interconnec tion of the principles mentioned and cannot be taken to imply that the principle of speed is not independent. At present, the formulation chosen in this way does not seem appropriate for several reasons and it would be more suitable to regulate the principle of speed in a separate provision of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The good news is that this is precisely how the new draft of the code currently conceives it, although even this draft is not ideal.en
