| dc.description.abstract-translated | In my article, I consider possible causes of two dispersals of Neolithic elements out of the so-called Central Plain in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. Both episodes under consideration were associated with spread of a broader package of cultural elements, and it is therefore probable that they were at least partly driven by shifts of human groups. Previously, both episodes have been interpreted in terms of the so-called early farming dispersal hypothesis which puts expansion of the Neolithic populations in association with demographic pressure caused by shift to agriculture. However, it is difficult to explain the first of the both episodes – following the end of the Peiligang Culture about 5000 BC – in this way, as cultivation seems to constitute only a minor component in the subsistence system of that time. It is therefore probable that movements of the post-Peiligang groups were rather caused by higher precipitation in that period and ensuing frequent flooding as well as enlargement of the bodies of water in the central, low-lying areas of the culture. On the other hand, the second episode after 4000 BC, associated with expansion of the Yangshao Culture, nicely fits scenario proposed by the early farming dispersal hypothesis. I then suggest that the main cause for the demographic rise observable in the Middle Yangshao Period and leading to ensuing expansion was an eventual shift from economic system combining cultivation of plants with hunting and gathering to almost exclusively agricultural way of subsistence. | en |
