The archaeology of communism

Abstract

The communist era left indelible material traces in all the countries of the former Soviet bloc. Archaeology focussing onthe communist period has shown in recent years that its methods can provide historical narratives with a detailed understandingof the original environment and spatial context and offer tangible evidence as represented by artefacts. It alsoopens up new questions related to the materiality of everyday life in the former Eastern Bloc. The social potential of suchan archaeological investigation is highlighted by the fact that the communist past still divides society in many countries,with some historical events and crimes being relativised or even denied, and tangible evidence of dark heritage is thereforegaining strong argumentative importance in competing memories. This paper raises questions concerning the archaeologicalstudy of state communism and deals with its possibilities, which result from the character of archaeological record.Presented examples include topics such as mass repressions, the Cold War and the Iron Curtain, forced relocation, collectivisationof agriculture, state atheism, armed resistance and nonviolent opposition, as well as suppression of a reformistdevelopment.

Komunistická éra zanechala nesmazatelné materiální stopy ve všech zemích bývalého sovětského bloku. Archeologie zaměřená na komunistické období ukázala v posledních letech, že její metody mohou historickým narativům poskytnout detailní porozumění původnímu prostředí a prostorovému kontextu a nabídnout hmatatelné důkazy reprezentované artefakty. Také otevírá nové otázky související s materialitou každodenního života v bývalém východním bloku. Sociální význam takového archeologického bádání je patrný z toho, že komunistická minulost stále rozděluje společnosti v mnoha zemích, přičemž některé historické události a zločiny jsou relativizovány nebo dokonce popírány, a proto hmatatelné důkazy temného dědictví získávají silný argumentační význam v konkurenčních pamětech. Tento článek klade otázky týkající se archeologického studia státního komunismu a zabývá se jeho možnostmi, které vyplývají z charakteru archeologického záznamu. Představené příklady zahrnují témata jako masové represe, studená válka a železná opona, nucené přesuny obyvatel, kolektivizace zemědělství, státní ateismus, ozbrojený odpor a nenásilná opozice, stejně jako potlačování reformního vývoje.
