| dc.description.abstract-translated | The subject of this thesis is an illustrated book based on the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, the Inferno. The emphasis is placed on contemporary and abstract readings of the poem. The book is illustrated with digital collages of 3D fractals, photos of nature and computer modelled fragments. Fractals are various self-similar objects of which any suitably chosen part is similar in shape to a given larger or smaller part when magnified or reduced to the same size. The fractals used in this book were created, composed, textured, lightened and rendered in the program Mandelbulber. The 3D models were created in Adobe Photoshop with the use of height maps: a technique which converts flat images to 3D objects based on light values of pixels. The final illustrations are bright, otherworldly, mildly psychedelic depictions of hell. The book consists of 300 pages with 75 colourful illustrations and is bound with an open spine: the pages of the book are saturated with different shades which darken progressively as the reader dives deeper into the realm of hell. | en |
