dc.description.abstract-translatedGlobally, funding spurs SMEs' success. Despite numerous studies on COVID-19, research on its effects on SMEs’ financing choices and levels remains limited. This paper examines the impact of COVID- 19 on the SMEs’ financing choices and levels in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Zimbabwe, pre-Covid-19, during and post-Covid-19. Based on a randomly selected sample of 714 SMEs, the results were generated using a combination of descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and logistic regression methods. The study drew five main findings. Firstly, while SMEs were funded from different sources before and during the three lockdowns, funding choices shifted during the lockdowns. Secondly, most SMEs were not operating during the first lockdown, but this changed towards the end of the last lockdown. Thirdly, there was a shift in types of funding from before to during the lockdown period. Fourthly, a distinction can be drawn between funding methods used by operating and non-operating SMEs. Finally, the level of financing using internal sources of finance decreased during the lockdowns while that of external sources of finance increased, and was largely dominated by bank financing, even though the level of funding by the government was low. Consequently, the study recommends that the government improve its quality and level of financial assistance and initiatives, the financial sector improves its depth and breadth, and SMEs improve their business models to ensure improved sources and levels of funding.en
