| dc.description.abstract-translated | Global tourism has reached unprecedented levels, leaving many iconic destinations facing a dilemma: how to protect local communities and cultural heritage while continuing to welcome visitors from around the world. In response, a widespread debate on overtourism has emerged, advocating for more sustainable travel practices. Drawing on a close analysis of digital media, this study examines a single TikTok post to show how overtourism rhetoric employs language, imagery, and persuasive strategies to frame tourists’ responsibility for environmental sustainability. The aim of this study is to examine how overtourism discourse shapes understandings of sustainable travel through language, with particular focus on speech acts and rhetorical devices as tools of persuasion, critique, and resistance. The methodological framework is grounded in critical discourse analysis (CDA) and eco-pragmatics, which enable the tracing of how rhetorical strategies construct resistance narratives and project future-oriented perspectives on tourism’s environmental and social impacts. The findings highlight the persuasive and ideological role of language in shaping debates on how global tourism can move toward more responsible and sustainable practices, while also assessing whether sufficient collective efforts are being made to preserve the world’s unique places. | en |
