First British Travelers and Residents in Japan: Sources and Perspectives of Research

Abstract

After the opening of the Japanese ports in the 50s of the 19th century, many foreigners started to visit the country. Due to the degree of their interest in the Far East, Britons were one of the most numerous and accordingly left quite many accounts of their experience in Japan. Thanks to the popularity of travelogues in the 19th century and the effort to record the observations on new cultures and societies, the visitors to Japan left a considerable written inheritance, through which it is now possible to follow their individual opinions and attitudes. Although these sources are highly subjective and must be used with a certain amount of caution, their comparative analysis can bring interesting results. The critical fact to note is that modern historians have primary sources of various proveniences and backgrounds at their disposal. Their authors had different reasons for coming to Japan, diverse levels of education, social standing, and different gender identity, which contributed to the fact that their perception of Japan was not the same. This phenomenon constitutes a broad possibility for further study into the topic of travels to Japan and the British view of Japanese culture and society. Although the topic of British-Japanese relations and the cultural exchange between both countries in the Bakumatsu and Early Meiji Periods was popular among modern historians in recent decades, there are still opportunities to study some specific topics to better understand the experience of the British in Japan.

Po otevření japonských přístavů v 50. letech 19. století začalo zemi navštěvovat mnoho cizinců. Vzhledem k míře zájmu o Dálný východ patřili Britové k nejpočetnějším a zanechali o svých zážitcích z Japonska poměrně mnoho svědectví. Díky oblibě cestopisů v 19. století a snaze zaznamenat postřehy o nových kulturách a společnostech zanechali návštěvníci Japonska značné písemné dědictví, díky němuž je dnes možné sledovat jejich individuální názory a postoje. Přestože jsou tyto prameny značně subjektivní a je třeba je používat s jistou dávkou opatrnosti, jejich srovnávací analýza může přinést zajímavé výsledky. Rozhodující je skutečnost, že moderní historikové mají k dispozici primární prameny různé provenience a původu. Jejich autoři měli různé důvody pro příchod do Japonska, různou úroveň vzdělání, společenské postavení a odlišnou genderovou identitu, což přispělo k tomu, že jejich vnímání Japonska nebylo stejné. Tento jev představuje širokou možnost pro další studium tématu cest do Japonska a britského pohledu na japonskou kulturu a společnost. Přestože téma britsko-japonských vztahů a kulturní výměny mezi oběma zeměmi v období Bakumatsu a na počátku období Meidži bylo v posledních desetiletích mezi moderními historiky populární, stále existují možnosti studia některých specifických témat, která by umožnila lépe pochopit zkušenosti Britů v Japonsku.
