| dc.description.abstract-translated | This paper explores various dimensions of judicial impartiality, with a focus on its representation in ethical codes for judges. The discussion is rooted in case studies from Slovak judicial practice – the disciplinary proceedings against Judge Michal Truban. The paper illustrates the complexities judges face when impartiality is questioned. Based on domestic disciplinary aspects, the analysis categorizes aspects of impartiality into procedural, status-related, and ethical dimensions and secondly into procedural, political and ethical as authored by Charles G. Geyh. The paper also sketches their interaction. Moreover, the paper draws upon Slovak and international standards of judicial conduct, such as the Slovak Judicial Code of Conduct of 2015 and the Bangalore Principles and recommendations from the Council of Europe to frame impartiality not only as a procedural requirement but as an ethical virtue intrinsic to judicial identity. Hence, the disciplinary treatment of procedural impartiality cannot replace the ethical one. | en |
