LTO Battery with Vertical Solar Cylinder Module in Long Term Application

Abstract

This paper focuses on the long-term durability and safety of L TO batteries operated in solar systems for street lighting applications, and it presents and describes a new electronic system designed specifically for this application. The effects of various solar panel shapes are briefly compared, with a main focus on the progressive hexagonal shape. The MPPT charging algorithm is explained in general, and its performance verified by tests. A significant part of the paper is devoted to the analysis and processing of collected long-term measured data and the impact of L TO cell aging in the used street lighting application. The considered L TO battery also includes its own BMS unit designed specifically for this project. The conclusion of the paper goes into the details about describing the proposed street lighting concept and the practical solution. The operation of the designed device was experimentally verified on a fully operational battery-powered SSLS prototype.
