dc.description.abstractExistence fyzické odlišnosti je zrcadlem biologické variability navazující na kulturní významy, které ji společnost přisuzuje. Tyto rozdíly jsou důsledkem evoluce, adaptace na prostředí a genetické diverzity druhu Homo sapiens. Forma nahlížení na fyzickou odlišnost jedince se neustále vyvíjí v čase i prostoru. Fyzické odlišnosti, ve formě pigmentace kůže, tvaru lebky, nebo výšky těla, byly po staletí předmětem pozorování, třídění, ale také zdrojem kontroverzních interpretací. Kvalifikace rasové typologie lidí dnes ustupuje před důrazem na genetickou a kulturní komplexnost.cs
dc.description.abstract-translatedThis bachelor thesis explores the cultural and historical representations of individuals with dwarfism, focusing particularly on their role in freak shows from antiquity to the present day. Dwarfism, a growth disorder with primarily genetic or hormonal causes, has long been subject not only to medical scrutiny but also to complex societal interpretations. The work highlights how individuals with dwarfism have been perceived and represented throughout history from symbolic figures in ancient courts, to entertainers in the freak show circuits of the 19th and early 20th centuries, until a representation in contemporary media. The thesis concludes that while freak shows were dehumanizing in many aspects, some performers managed to flip their marginalization by gaining financial independence and public recognition. The shifting perception of preference and ethics in society eventually led to the critique and decline of freak shows, illustrating that cultural preferences are historically and socially conditioned rather than fixed or universal.en
