dc.description.abstract-translatedThe AI Act is a new regulatory framework for artificial intelligence in the European Union, adopted to protect fundamental rights and security in relation to the development and use of AI. While AI can have a positive impact on the environment, for example in detecting and predicting environmental events or optimising energy networks, its environmental impacts can also be significantly negative. The main issues are the high energy intensity of training and running large language models (LLMs), the need to build new data centres, and increased demands on natural resource extraction. With the growing popularity of AI, these demands will only continue to rise, and current estimates suggest that AI energy consumption may be comparable to that of a smaller European country. Given these environmental challenges, the question is to what extent the AI Act should and does regulate the environmental impacts of AI. The current version of AI Act deals with this issue in a very limited way and the risk of shifting the ecological burden to other regions, such as the US, where much of the AI development is taking place, is significant. This paper makes the case for why the AI Act should have included measures aimed at protecting the environment, and discusses specific proposals, such as the creation of energy standards for AI, regulation of data centre construction, and incentives for green AI development. Given the limited literature on this issue to date, this presentation provides an overview of potential solutions and recommendations for creating a more sustainable framework for AI development and deployment.en
