Comparative Vibration Response Analysis of 3-phase and 9-phase PMSM Prototype

Abstract

The multiphase machines have become an object of interest to many researchers and engineers as they offer significantly higher reliability since they are less prone to high vibration levels after a one-phase disconnection fault. Moreover, multiphase machines provide less vibration due to the smooth waveform of the magnetomotive force. This study aims to characterize and perform the comparative analysis of 3-phase and 9-phase PMSM prototypes strictly in terms of phase disconnecting faulty operational regimes. The paper describes the designed condition monitoring and diagnostic system used for data acquisition. The investigation confirms the hypothesis on lower vibration levels during a one-phase disconnection fault. The results also include a spectral and RMS values comparison and a discussion of both 3-phase and 9-phase machine vibrations in various combinations of faulty regimes.
