Abstract
The article discusses the pressing need for the European Union to purchase ammunition outside the bloc to quickly resupply Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. With Russia producing a substantial amount of artillery munitions and making tactical gains, Ukraine is in a dire situation, running low on supplies and facing delayed military support from its allies. The Czech Republic has spearheaded an initiative to buy 800,000 artillery rounds from non-EU countries to urgently bolster Ukraine's defenses, despite some internal EU disagreements and opposition to sourcing military materials from outside the EU. This approach is seen as a temporary measure to support Ukraine while the EU works on boosting its own defense production capabilities. The authors argue that buying ammo from non-EU sources would provide immediate relief to Ukraine and demonstrate the EU’s commitment to supporting Kyiv in the long term.
