University Students’ Perception of Online Language Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The paper reports the findings of surveys conducted at the University of West Bohemia during thesummer terms of 2019/2020 and 2020/21 when teachers shifted face-to-face classes online andadjusted their pedagogical approach and course content due to COVID-19. Though it is evident thatteachers struggled with the transition initially, this paper seeks to understand what methodologies wereeffective with the transition of online teaching over the two terms. Specifically, it aims to analyze thelevel of satisfaction of university students of English at the Department of Applied Linguistics at theUniversity of West Bohemia with online learning. First, the authors present and analyze research aimedat online language teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Next, the authors describe findings ofqualitative research based on analyzing 102 responses from the summer terms of the academic years2019/20 and 2020/21 in terms of students’ opinion on the following: teaching methodology, suitabilitycommunication platforms, student feedback, learning experience, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.The results show the importance of communication, instructors’ personalities, digital tools, andconditions for learning. Lastly, the authors give helpful suggestions that can improve the experience ofuniversity student language learners in an online context

Příspěvek přináší výsledky průzkumů provedených na Západočeské univerzitě v Plzni v průběhu letního semestru 2019/2020 a roku 2020/21, kdy učitelé přesunuli prezenční výuku na internet a upravili svůj pedagogický přístup a obsah kurzů kvůli COVID-19. Ačkoli je zřejmé, že učitelé měli zpočátku s přechodem potíže, tento článek se snaží porozumět tomu, jaké metodiky byly efektivní při přechodu na online výuku v průběhu dvou semestrů. Konkrétně si klade za cíl analyzovat míru spokojenosti vysokoškolských studentů angličtiny na Ústavu jazykové přípravy Západočeské univerzity v Plzni s online výukou. Nejprve autoři představují a analyzují výzkumy zaměřené na online výuku jazyků v průběhu pandemie COVID-19. Dále autoři popisují zjištění kvalitativního výzkumu založeného na analýze 102 odpovědí z akademických let 2019/20 a 2020/21 z hlediska názorů studentů na: metodiku výuky, vhodnost výuky a její efektivitu, komunikační platformy, zpětnou vazbu od studentů, zkušenosti s výukou a vnitřní a vnější motivaci. Výsledky ukazují důležitost komunikace, osobnosti vyučujícího, digitálních nástrojů a jejich podmínky pro učení. Nakonec autoři uvádějí užitečné návrhy, které mohou zlepšit zkušenosti vysokoškolských studentů studujících jazyky v online kontextu.
