| dc.description.abstract-translated | This study explores the life of Margaret of Luxembourg, the youngest daughter of Emperor Charles IV, and her marriage to John III, the Burgrave of Nuremberg, within the context of 14th-century European dynastic politics. Mar- garet, born in 1373, was one of the numerous children of Charles IV, unlike her more famous siblings, Margaret’s marriage to John III of Nuremberg remains a less remembered but pivotal episode in the alliances of the Luxembourg family. The marriage between Margaret and John III, was not only a personal union but a strategic political alliance. This union was part of a broader effort by the Luxembourg dynasty to strengthen its ties with powerful regional families, particularly in the Empire’s southern territories. The study examines the political significance of this marriage in the context of Charles IV’s broader diplomatic and dynastic strategies, particularly his efforts to secure support in the Empire and to consol- idate his position first in the Upper Palatinate (New Bohemia) and then to use this conveniently in exchange for the Brandenburg Mark. Through an analysis of mainly archival sources, the study offers insight into the strategies of dynastic politics in the late Middle Ages and the roles that women, though often peripheral in historical narratives, played in shaping the political landscape of their time. | en |
